External Conflict

  • The external conflict was Tom and his surroundings became a major point in the story because when he tries to retrieve the paper he has to get his way back into the apartment; struggling to get back in he has to figure a way out. Either to return back safe in his apartment or face death!

a) Tom goes on the ledge to retrieve the yellow paper.

Q: 4a.) Contrast Tom's attitude toward life at the beginning of the story with his attitude at the end.

b) On page 113 it states "Even if his plan were adopted, he told himself, it wouldn't bring him a raise in pay--not immediately, anyway, or as a direct result. In my opinion, his decision wasn't surprising because his character was distracted with the "unimportant things"and the document meant something to him because it would take him about two months for something identical.

a) His attitude from the beginning changed towards the end because in the beginning he was busy with excessive work and because of that he didn't go to the theaters with his wife. He had then put his life at risk for endangering himself to retrieve the yellow paper that life is too short and he should of gone with his wife whom he loves, to the theaters.
