Lesson 1 : Unit Introduction

Objective: Understand the importance of cardiovascular (CV) fitness to general health

Intro Question: How can knowledge be applied to improve and maintain health and fitness?

Questions:

  • In what areas of your life can you use progressive relaxation?
  • What do you think will happen to your heart rate at the end of the session
  • What are some other physical manifestations that my occur due to the progressive relaxation session?

Intro: Discuss the benefits of developing and maintaining CV fitness and the importance of exercising within a target heart rate (HR)

Objective: The primary purpose of this class is to help students be conscious of their health and consider how information from readings, discussions, and activities in this class can be used to maintain and improve health.

Discussion:

  • What are some things you do in your life now to consciously improve health/fitness?
  • Would you describe your family as being health conscious? If not, explain.
  • Is there anything that is equally or more important than your health?
  • What are some of your own personal experiences regarding health/fitness?

Intro Activity

  • Recall some of the effects of relieved stress
  • Consider mental, emotional, psychological, and physical stress
  • List responses on the board (Glencoe Health pg. 198-204)

Activity #3: Create a presentation on the topic you chose to research. You must present this information to the class in a creative way.

Why the 3-Minute Step Test?

  • It is a screening device of cardiovascular (CV) fitness, not an actual assessment
  • Quick and easy to administer
  • Does not need too much space

Discussion:

  • Who thinks that school can sometimes be a personal source of stress?
  • What particular things about school or the school environment might cause stress?
  • Do you have personal relationships (family, friends, etc.) that are a source of stress?

Equipment:

  • 12" bench for stepping
  • Clock with sweep hand or stop watch
  • Metronome or rhythmic music to maintain step rate

Procedure:

  • Test begins at resting heart rate
  • Single-leg step-ups with whole foot on step (96BPM)
  • Sit down and take heart rate
  • Compare your heart rate to the norms provided

Group Work:

  • Discuss and write down different ways to manage/reduce stress (music, sleep, exercise)
  • What challenges might someone encounter in using any of the stress management techniques discussed in the group?

Guidelines:

  • Use your assigned MacBooks or the Glencoe Health text to obtain the necessary information
  • Groups will be provided with approximately 10 minutes for research and 3-5 minutes to present your findings to the class

Objective:

  • Raise awareness of how fitness is an important variable on how well one is able to manage stress.
  • Understand how resting heart rate and heart rate recovery can be used as measures of CV fitness

Activity: Define or demonstrate the following concepts

  • Overload, progression, repetition range, recovery
  • Muscular strength, muscular endurance
  • Muscle grouping, drop set, super set, forced reps
  • Giant set, Rest pause
  • Lifting form, speed of movement, range of motion
  • What is the proper breathing technique?

Intro: Step-Test Worksheets and take 1-minute pulse count. Record the results.

Activity:

  • Step up and down at a synchronized pace for 3 minutes.
  • Take heart rate and record 30-sec pulse rates for each of the following
  • 1 minute after step test
  • 2 minutes after step test
  • 3 minutes after step test
  • Total the three numbers to determine your recovery index
  • Locate and circle your recovery index in the chart provided

Discuss: Do the results make sense to you? Do you think this is an accurate indication of our CV fitness level?

Lesson 11 : Resistance Exercise

Objective: Apply the concepts/ principles presented in Lesson 10.

Activity: 5 groups rotate to each of the following stations

  • High-reps Resistance Exercise
  • Super Set
  • Giant Set
  • Drop Set
  • Rest-Pause

Make sure you are performing activities at the proper speed, using safe weights, controlled movements, and a full range of motion.
