The energy of the particles that make up an object determines whether it is in a solid, liquid, or gas state.
The Particle Model
of Matter
When studying matter, there are four main ideas.
1. All matter is made up of tiny particles.
2. The particles of matter are always moving.
3. The particles have spaces between them.
4. Adding heat to matter makes the particles move faster.
Chemistry is the study of matter, how it changes, and how it reacts with other matter.
In sublimation, individual particles of a solid gain enough energy to break away completely from
the other particles, forming a gas.
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Calculating Density
When matter changes state, it does not lose or gain mass.
The mass water vapour that is produced by melting an ice cube and then boiling the water is the same as the original ice cube.
Homework
1. What are the four main ideas of the particle model ?
2. a) In general, does density increase or decrease as matter transitions from a liquid to solid? Explain?
b) Are there any exceptions? Provide an example.
3. Explains what happens to the particles of matter when frost forms on a window.
3. Density handout questions.
Density is the amount of mass in a specified space. It is a way to measure how compact an object is.
