Hypothesis
If cotton attracts the most static electricity, then cotton should hold more electric charge than any other material.
Static electricity is a build up of an electric charge on the surface of an object. The electric charge stays on the object until it goes into the ground or is quickly negitivelly charged.
It's caused when you rub two objects together, then pull them apart.
When the air is dry or there is low humidity outside, more static electricity builds up.
All physical objects are made up of atoms. Inside an atom are protons, electrons and neutrons. The protons are positively charged, the electrons are negatively charged, and the neutrons are neutral.
Experimental Slides
I gathered seven different types of fabric.
(Cotton, Polyester, Nylon, Arcrylic, Silk, Leather, Spandex)
Then I blew up seven different balloons. They were all the same size and color.
I cut holes in computer paper with a hole puncher. There were approximately 100 pieces of hole punched paper.
Then I rubbed a balloom on each different fabric for 15 seconds.
I held each balloon over a plate with the hole punched papers on it for 20 seconds.
I then counted all the papers that were attracted to each balloon.
Results
Cotton and Nylon had the highest static electric charge after rubbing the balloons on the clothing.
Conclusion
My hypothesis was correct. Cotton did have the most electric charge. Nylon also had the most.
Things I could do to improve my experiment:
do it on more clothing or do it more than two day.
Static electricity is the result of an imbalance between negative and positive charges in an object.
Static electricity can be harmful if there is a creation
of sparks in an explosive or flammable atmosphere.
These sparks can set off an explosion or fire.
