Hypothesis

Cannabis may be useful as medicine

If cannabis can reduce pain and increase appetite, then it may be useful in relieving the pain of many chronic pain patients (i.e. chemotherapy, Crohn's disease, Multiple sclerosis, and neuropathic pain patients).

Experiment

(Smoked Cannabis)

Analysis

  • THC can be detected in the plasma of the blood after the first puff of a cigarette

  • The highest concentration occurs within 10 min and decreases to 20% of the peak by 30 min

  • There can be wide variations in concentrations in different individuals

How effective is cannabis in the treatment of cancer, chemo, and Chron's disease patients?

  • 3.5% - 7% THC were the most effective

  • 30% decrease in pain intensity = better quality of life

Prediction

The use of cannabis in chronic pain patients will relieve their pain with less side effects.

Smoked Cannabis cont.

The use of cannabis in patients with rapid weight loss due to nausea or loss of appetite will have an increase in appetite and will be able to maintain a healthy weight.

Other "fun facts" About Cannabis

  • 1% - 8% THC by weight ~ 4-32 mg THC

  • Placebo

  • HIV peripheral neuropathy

  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Fatal overdose with cannabis alone has not been reported (heart conditions)
  • There can be adverse psychiatric side effects
  • Long-term health risks are unclear (non-medicinal)

Results

  • 34% -40% reduction in pain intensity~ THC

  • 17%-20% reduction in pain intensity ~ placebo

Summary

  • Smoked cannabis reduces pain in chronic pain patients
  • Increases quality of life
  • No long-term side effects
  • Safe
