“In 1994, nearly one million Tutsi persons, were murdered by Hutu soldiers over a conflict of land ownership. Approximately 1,000 Tutsi refugees took shelter at a luxury hotel in central Kigali owned by Sabena Airlines. Paul Rusesabagina, the hotel manager was essentially in charge of making sure these refugees were not killed during the multiple invasions by the Hutu soldiers.”
Gregoire was a member of a Bantu-speaking people (Hutus) forming the majority population in Rwanda and Burundi. Hutus are traditionally farming people and were historically dominated by the Tutsi people; this led in the 1994 to large-scale ethnic violence, especially in Rwanda.
The ‘other’ is not important to the character Gregoire. Although our actions are supposed to always correspond to others by involving or affecting them, his do not. Gregoire does not allow the other to help him become his true self rather he disregards the other and believes that he is independent by not allowing one to affect them.
The character Gregoire regards the other by disobeying another individual’s command. Paul, the hotel manager tells Gregoire to return to work as he was seen on a couch with a lady but he would not listen. He completely ignores the manager and continues to social with the woman. This shows the discourtesy he has as a character towards others.
Gregoire is committed to himself making him very narcissistic. His character shows that he is extremely self-involved, vain and selfish. He shows many narcissistic traits such as admiration of his own attributes.
This character’s use of language and how he chooses to communicate with others reveals to us a variety of significant life experiences and commitments. In class, we learn about, how we all are a part of a community that shares a common language; and through our language, we name the values which we stand for. We can depict Gregoire’s values, life experience and commitments throughout the movie from the language he chooses. An example of this is when he blackmails Paul. He moves into the penthouse suite, neglects his job duties, and believes that he is superior to everyone in the hotel. He does this because his advantage over Paul, telling him how he will expose the truth about the Tutsi people living in the hotel calling them cockroaches. In this scene, we can tell by the tone in which he speaks to Paul and the words he used can be interrupt into, his beliefs, values and, what he stands for. Also in class we learn, just as a word can hold no value, be meaningless, it can have great value. Thus, when Gregoire calls the Tutsi people cockroaches he is sharing with us his views and why thelanguage we use is so significant. God created us in his image and when we use demeaning, degrading insults at one another,we are degrading God’s precious creations as Gregoire did to the Tutsi people. Therefore, Gregoire use of language reveals a lot about his life experience and commitments.
Gregoire's action is fondly embodied throughout the movie in how he treats the Tutsi people. His actions shows his true character and what kind of man he really is. For example his hatred for the Tutsi people is shown in the scene when he calls and warns the Hutu that, the United Nations were transporting Tutsi people to a refugee camp for safety. He knew the danger this would put the Tutsi people in and still choose to go through with it. This resulted in an ambush where the Hutu tried to massacre the people on the UN trucks. His actions are greatly embodied in this scene because his true feelings for the Tutsi is shown and he acts on those feelings putting the Tutsi people in danger. Therefore, Gregoire action are embodied through the movie with the unjust, unlawful acts he participates in against the Tutsi people.
Gregoire’s conscience as capacity, process and judgement was not evident. This is because he may have been aware of the wrongdoings that was occurring around him but did not act in a way to change to the good. There was no process of him deciding on making the right choices thus leading him to not contribute to the hotel’s needs. As to judgement, Gregoire was ordered to commit on being a part of the staff of Hotel Rwanda but did not compel himself to his duty.
Gregoire's conscience developed as the movie went on. This was shown when him and Paul drove through the pile of dead bodies on the ground. This lead to Gregoire's turning point as a character. He was hit with reality and realized that a genocide was occurring around him causing him to develop a sense of what is right and wrong.
