Evolution of The Olympic Games

Games Return

  • 1896 - first modern olympic games begin in Athens, Greece
  • official language was French
  • there were about 50,000 spectators
  • most participants were Greek
  • women weren't allowed to participate until 1900
  • winners received a silver medal, olive branch & diploma
  • continued every 4 years

Women Competitors today

First Women Champ

  • allowed to participate in every sport
  • In the 2012 Olympics, every participating nation had at least one female included.
  • Also, the United States made history by acquiring more female than male competitors.

  • In Olympia, Greece 776BCE
  • Ancient games continued every 4 years but ended in year 393CE

Changes over the years

1904 - first games where gold, silver, and bronze medals were awarded for first, second, & third place finalists

1920 - first time Olympic oath was said and first time Olympic flag was raised

1924 - First Winter Olympics

1928 - officially named Summer Olympic Games and first time the Olympic Torch was lit

Robert "Bob" Mathias

1932 - African American became star of the Olympics

and won 4 gold medals

1968 - first and only time Olympic games were held in Latin America

2004 - Games occurred in original country of Greece in Athens where 202 nations competed

  • worked with the United States Olympic Committee and helped form the Olympic Training Center
  • supports young children in their dream to become athletes and educates them about dangers of alcohol and drugs

Olympic Setbacks

  • In 1916, 1940 and 1944 the Olympic Games could not take place due to destruction/devastation caused by the 1st and 2nd World Wars
  • whether Germany should enter the Olympics as a united Germany or East and West Germany
  • Because of the Cold War, there was a US boycott in 1980 in Moscow to protest the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and to get rid of the USSR's involvement in the games but the USSR violently boycotted the Los Angeles games in 1984 in response
