The location of these fast food restaurants enabled more people to be exposed to them and led to the rise of fast food.

Australians began drifting from the usual British style of eating to one focused around fast and convenient food. It was then around the 1960’s and 1970’s when the three major American food chains of KFC, Pizza Hut and McDonald's made their way to Australia, and the rest is...well...history.

1. Health

It was the time of World War Two when America’s strong fast food culture led to its becoming in Australia. During the war there were a large number of Americans based in Australia, and this led to the introduction of a range of processed foods such as frozen foods/meals. The Americans created a new lifestyle and diet for Australians by the introduction of fast foods and their convenience.

Fast food is extremely high in saturated fat, sugar and salt. It lacks fresh fruit and vegetables which are full of vitamins and minerals. Its extensive consumption has led Australia since post-WWII times to become the fourth fattest nation in the world, with over half the population overweight or obese in 2014-15.

Consequently, the rates of cardiovascular (CV) disease, Type 2 diabetes and depression have increased dramatically and CV disease is currently the number one cause of death in Australia.

2. What we eat

Fast food has shifted Australian society from a British style of eating characterised by traditional home cooked meals, to an American style. Fast food is tasty, convenient, cheap and easy. With Australian society’s busy lives, many have turned to fast food.

As a result, majority of food consumed is ready-made or pre-prepared and lacks valuable nutrition. Fast food has also given children power to eat what they’d like. In 2013, 14-17 year old Australians together ate 44.1 million serves of hot chips and 30.2 million hamburgers.

3. The way we spend

Fast food refers to easily prepared, processed food that can be prepared and served quickly and in mass production. Fast food is categorized typically to be significantly less nutritious than other foods and meals. Nowadays fast food chains have greatly developed and are continuously changing with time and adapting to the needs and wants of modern day lives.

Well, the first official fast food restaurant was the 'White Castle Restaurant' which opened in 1921 in America. This is no surprise as America had a major role in the spread and development of the fast food industry on a global level.

Fast food has changed the way Australians spend. Money that use to be spent budgeting trying to buy expensive fresh produce is being used to buy takeaway and fast foods. In fact, there was a 1.9% rise in these sales in 2015 (ABS), while fruit and meat sales decreased.

3. The way we spend (cont.)

Fast food has impacted Australian society in a variety of ways, both positively and negatively.

Australians however don’t realise that fast food is more expensive than home-made meals in the long run and that they are harming their savings. As a nation, $33 million is spent in restaurants, cafes and takeaway shops. This is money that could be saved.

4. Jobs

Fast food was, and still is, associated with urban development. Whenever and wherever a large mass of people would be, fast food would follow. Though where did the idea of an actual fast food restaurant first originate?

The fast food industry has provided many employment opportunities for Australian society, ranging from retail workers to chefs, and has strengthened the economy. It has however, also harmed Australian farmers’ work as Australians aren’t purchasing as many fresh foods, dairy and meats.

Fast food and its restaurants, which once had a terrible reputation of being dirty and of poor quality, have begun to raise their status in society. All changes that have occurred have been to extend convenience for consumers and be more appealing.
