BUDDHISM SYMBOLS

In the second century BCE, people started to excavate Buddhist monasteries in rock, creating a large amount of artwork to withstand the ages. Probably the earliest typical Buddhist monument is the stupa, which was often specially decorated. The first actual Buddha images appeared around the first century BCE, so until then the artwork was largely symbolic in nature.

There are many special or holy days held throughout the year by the Buddhist community. Many of these days celebrate the birthdays of Bodhisattvas in the Mahayana tradition or other significant dates in the Buddhist calender. the most significant celebration happens every May on the night of the full moon, when Buddhist all over the world celebrate the birth.

Travelers to countries with a Buddhist population are familiar with the sight of monks in colorful robes wandering along. with their draped robes and shaved heads, these monks are hard to miss. monks have existed for centuries, and they representatives of Buddhism.
