- Malaysia was first known as the Federation of Malaya which held 11 states
- Malaysia was under British powers for approximately 446 years (from 1511 until 1957)

3. British: 1824-1942, 1945-1957
4. Siamese: 1821-1909
5. Japanese: 1942-1945
- After their independence, Sabah and Sarawak joined the federation of Malaya in 1963 and the country known as Malaysia was formed
- The capital of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur
- on the Malay Peninsula in southeast Asia
- area slightly exceeds that of New Mexico
- mostly covered by extensive forests - provides several different types of wood to the world
- several mountain ranges
- Mount Kinabalu is the tallest mountain in Malaysia
- two distinct parts to this country: Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia
- Peninsular Malaysia is located south of Thailand, north of Singapore and east of Sumatra
- East Malaysia is located on island of Borneo and shares borders with Brunei and Indonesia
- Sarawak and Sabah are also parts of Malaysia
- Around 1st century, they had strong trading connections with China and India which influenced its culture, language, and customs
- Due to its location, Malaya was a meeting point for traders and travelers from the East and West
- First known as Federation of Malasyia
- Historical Figures:
-Parameswara- Javanese Prince that made Malacca, a city in Malaya, a major trading port
-Abu Bakar Riayatuddin Al-Muadzam Shah- 4th Sultan (ruler) of Pahang. He reigned from May 29 1904 – May 7 1974

- British brought in workers from China and India to work for them.
- In 1870, rubber trees were introduced to Malaya to be planted and exported later on. British brought in workers from India to work in the rubber estates.
- Chinese workers mostly worked in mines mining tin.
- Malayans were mostly involved in agriculture, personal and government service, fishing and handicrafts.
- Four types of schools when Malaya was still under British colonization.

- With the help of H.N. Ridley, they perfected the 'Herring Bone' tapping method
- The number of rubber plantations had grown to a bigger scale
- During the 1930's the Malaya's rubber plantation had supplied 90% of rubber throughout the world
