Overview

A cell uses DNA to determine a sequence of amino acids in the protein through two stages: transcription and translation. This determines the proteins structure, resulting in its function. RNA assists in the process in the form of mRNA, rRNA, and tRNA.

Transcription

  • Takes place in the nucleus
  • Produces a DNA copy called mRNA; mRNA transports this to the ribosomes/cytoplasm to start translation
  • Helicase unwinds one DNA strand
  • Polymerase takes mRNA nucleotides(A,U,C,G) and links them through hydrogen bonds

Translation

  • Occurs in the ribosome of the cell
  • Translates mRNA into a protein by linking amino acids provided by the tRNA
  • Small and large ribsomal subunits are made of proteins and rRNA
