The North Carolina State Flag was not made official until 1885. One of the reasons why this happened was in 1861 North Carolina decided to leave the Union and join the Confederacy. After the Civil War, and many debates of what the flag should look like it became official in 1885.

North Carolina State Motto
“to be rather than seem”
The North Carolina State Motto “to be rather than seem” is expressed from the Latin phrase “Esse Quam Videri”. It was originally a quote from the Marcus Ciciero who, was a Roman philosopher, and Roman statesman. To be rather than seem means to be who you say you are, not lie about things you really are not.
