almost complete control
over the people.
Today, the Obama White House is backing regulations that
make it legal for the FBI surveillance to observe messaging
services like Facebook, Skype, and Blackeberry.
We don't have these now, but posters would
announce "Big Brother is Watching You"

government would set out to control all
aspects of the people in their lives and jobs.

Either made people fear or like the government depending on their views.
In WWII, the Nazis believed in using propaganda
as a vital tool in achieving their goals.

A schools definition of censorship is to supervise
the conduct and morals of others.
The daily news is censored to only
show people what will make publicity,
not what will cause controversy.
Under US law, the Pentagon has legal
power to exercise "shutter control".

In the novel 1984, there is a theme of memory and the past.
In the novel, it is thought that "Without memory, the Party is able to control history. By controlling the past, the Party also controls the present – because its constituents will accept everything the Party says."
