Think about the scene with Cruz and the killing of his cousin. Why is it important to have goals and the self-discipline to achieve them?

It is good to have goals and self discipline because without you wouldn't be able to go to college. This also relates to having a job, house, family, and a good life. If you didn't have goals you wouldn't get anywhere. Without self discipline you would get in trouble and not be able to achieve goals because you are stuck in prison.

Do you agree with the lock-out? Why or why not

I agree with the lock out because the boys needed to start focusing in school and need to take initiative in order to get school work done. Without focusing on school, they can't focus in basketball because they don't know how to do it in school. Education will get you farther because you will have the knowledge to know how to have a job, buy a house, and be responsible. Basketball will give a couple skills like working with others, but this won't get you college.

After the first basketball game, what does Cruz do to try to boost his self-esteem (the scene after the game where he talks to a few players)? Does he succeed in raising his self-esteem? Why do you think people try bring others down?

Do you think that the contract is fair? What does your opinion say about your values?

I think Cruz did raise his self esteem because later he wants to join the team and he is willing to do a lot of pushups and suicides to get back on. People try to bring others down because they want to make themselves feel good. They may also do this because it has happened to them.

Coach Carter stood up for what he believed in. What does this say about his character?

This says that he is protective. He is not a coward, scared, and truthful. If he wasn't truthful he wouldn't have stood up for what he believed in. He would have lied about everything.

I think the contract was fair because we have to follow rules where we need need to have passing grades in order to play. He cares about them, so he made the goal GPA higher. he also made them wear ties on game day. I think both of these requirements are fair because this teaches the players that they need to be able to follow rules, have self determination, and be responsible for themselves. My opinion says about my values that I follow directions and believe that everyone should be determined and responsible.

Why does Coach Carter value education more than winning basketball games, when according to the superintendent, his job is to win basketball games?

Coach Carter values education more than winning basketball games because educatin will get you farther in life and will get you in not as much trouble. If he focused on basketball games the players would get in more trouble and wouldn't go to college.

What was the main theme (message) of the movie?

Self discipline, responsibility, not being selfish, and not thinking big about yourself are key characteristics that will get you far in life.

Describe the self-concept that the basketball players had at the beginning of the movie. How has the way they see themselves changed towards the end of the movie?

Coach Carter Movie Review

The players didn't really care about school. They had no respect for their coach. They didn't try hard. They just wanted to play basketball. At the end, they had respect for their coach. They cared about school and they were a team. They didn't just play individually, but together.
