The History of Garfield Middle School

2000-2001

Fall 2008

Fall 2013

A group of parents of 5th graders begin to discuss adding a middle school to Garfield Montessori Magnet School, then a K-6.

Ms. Rapson joins as a middle school teacher in room 14.

Fall of 2002

Ms. Rogers joins as a middle school teacher, replacing Mr. Smith. Mrs. Clubbs and Ms. Rogers attend training in Crystal Lake, IL.

The wall is built between the two rooms and tables and chairs are added.

Summer 2014

  • Due to the overwhelming requests by those parents, Garfield Middle School begins with 37 7th graders.
  • Started under direction of teacher Mr. Smith, former principal Debbie Alexander, and parent Jackie Bullard, as well as many other families.
  • Ms. Reynolds joins as a teaching assistant.
  • A committee visits Montessori middle schools in Crystal Lake, IL and Milwaukee and brought ideas back to design the program.

Ms. Rapson attends 7-week Montessori Secondary (ages 12-18) training course in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Clubbs teaches all language classes and Ms. Rapson teaches all math classes.

Mr. Neuhaus joins as a middle school teacher in room 14, replacing Ms. Rogers. At this time, Mrs. Clubbs taught pre-algebra and Mr. Neuhaus taught algebra. Mr. Neuhaus attended Montessori secondary (ages 12-18) training in Houston, Texas.

Mrs. Clubbs joins Garfield as a middle school teacher, working with Mr. Smith and Debbie Holeman Shipp (previously Alexander), with Ann Taylor as guidance counselor.

During these early years of the middle school, rooms 12 and 14 were one large classroom. There were no tables; students sat on risers or on the floor and brought in pillows to sit on. There were no Promethean boards or iPads.
