THE SIGNIFIGANCE OF LIGHT AND DARK IMAGERY
Light and dark imagery is one of the most used themes in the play. The use of light and dark imagery is used to demonstrate the contrast between positive and negative emotions or thoughts. Shakespeare utilizes light and dark imagery as he uses it to compare Juliet’s beauty to Romeo to other elements such as the jewel in the dark African complexion, as well as used to display life and death in the play.
Light and dark imagery is also significant to life and death, life being light and death being dark. Due to the fact that Romeo and Juliet suffer death in the end of the play due to wanting to have a life together it is relevant to how Shakespeare uses light and darkness to portray it, not to mention to foreshadow further events to take place. In (5.3.85-86) Romeo speaks to say, “ For here lies Juliet, and her beauty makes this vault a feasting presence full of light”. Even through the darkness of death Romeo is still able to see the light and Juliet’s beauty peaking through that darkness, as said before, that Juliet’s brightness can light up any room, even in a bad situation as death, Romeo is still able to see Juliet as lightness even in her state of darkness, in other words the opposites of "dark" and "light" to describe Juliet's beauty.
the contrast between As previously noted, the contrast between opposites or positive and negative to describe ones beauty is clearly depicted in the play when used by either Romeo or Juliet. The example of the Ethiopian’s ear displays the image of an element that stands out, as Romeo and Juliet see each other as light peaking through darkness. Furthermore Shakespeare uses light and dark imagery to give the readers a more distinctive image on how Romeo sees’ Juliet in his eyes.
Light and dark imagery is a main factor to the play. It is used to contrast two; it is of the most often repeated image in the play and one of the most evident types of Imagery. Romeo and Juliet’s use light and dark imagery provided a more intense attraction between the two lovers. As death was referred to as darkness, Romeo was still able to see the light in Juliet’s tomb in her state of darkness, as well as Juliet, being his main attraction as the Jewel in a dark complexion. The contrast between light and dark imagery was able to create a distinct image on the love and attraction they have for each other.
Romeo and Juliet both refer to and think of each other as fomrs of light. In saying this, this, light and dark imagery reminds us that Romeo and Juliet’s attraction for each other stand out in any dark situation and that no darkness can conceal the light they see in each other. The contrast between light and dark is relatively similar to good and evil. Shakespeare uses these metaphors or similes to show that good can contrast badly or that two opposites (oxymoron) can create a more vivid image, which is what Shakespeare, is trying to captivate. When Romeo witnesses Juliet he says “It seems she hangs upon thecheek of the night like a rich jewel in an Ethiopes’s ear; beauty too dear! (Shakespeare 1.5.51-56). The brightness of Juliet’s beauty is compared to the darkness of an Ethiopian, meaning the bright piece of jewelry is Juliet, by saying this Romeo tells the readers that Juliet stands out in a room full of people as if she is the jewel in the dark ear, In a room full of people, to Romeo, Juliet so happened to be the “light” of the room.
