Film is storytelling at its finest. Film gives us the ability to cross borders, create a story with pure imagination and heart or tell someone’s story by bringing their words to life. I was a shy kid with vast imagination and had a hard time going to school, I was bullied as a kid and had very low self-esteem. But I always remember that a movie made me feel better and for a while I did not know why, something about films made me happy and took me to a world where anything was possible. I remember watching movies with my dad, just me and him and at the end of every movie we watch we would have a commentary on what we did and did not like about the film, and we still do that today. I guess I saw movies as a coming together moment between family and friends and place that had no boundaries or limits, you can anything you wanted to be and growing up gave me the confidence to reach for the stars and to never stop dreaming. That’s why I hold on to dreams because only you and of course with God can make them realities and I would not be where I am today if I did not hope for what the future held, because at my worst times I dreamt of a better tomorrow.
That’s why I want to become a filmmaker, if I can inspire someone out there that dreams can become real and all you must do is have the will to make it happen. Through my story or the stories, I make through film then all the constant pain and struggle had been worth it. Being an African American woman should not be a barrier but a bridge as I have always said there is no plan B through the rejection, acceptations and accomplishments I had through life so far, I am ready for what’s next in my life.
