History of the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies is a non profit organization that was founded in Ottawa in1957 by Richard Taylor who was president of the Ottawa Humane Society, Alne Cameron who was a former Veterinary Director General, Senator Frederic McGrand, and Gord Gunn, a former lawyer who had witnessed the suffering of horses in World War 1.

Currently, the organization is led by Barbara Cartwright who is the Chief Executive Officer. Barbara Cartwright joined CFHS in July 2011. Some of the CEO's Before Barbara Cartwright were Steve Carrol, who was CEO from 2006 to 2011 and Robert Van Tongerloo who was CEO from 2000 to 2005.

CFHS' mission statement

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies mission statement is "As Canada’s voice for Animal Welfare, we drive positive, progressive change to end animal cruelty, improve animal protection and promote the humane treatment of all animals.

As the convener and representative of the largest animal welfare community in Canada, we advance the welfare of animals, with a strong national voice promoting the interests and concerns of animal welfare to government, policy makers, industry and the public."

Funding

The CFHS does not receive any government funding. The CFHS depends entirely on their volunteers and contributors form the community and Canadian organizations such as PetSmart Charities of Canada, Petsecure, The Animal Welfare Foundation of Canada (AWFC), and Pragmatic for some examples
