Lord of the Flies
By: William Golding
The story takes place when a place crashes on an uncharted island. Leaving a group of unsupervised boys, alone on an island.
During Chapter 1, we find out how the boys ended up on the island. They were a group of Enlgish boys that were on a plane that got shot down over the ocean. Ralph and Piggy travel around the island and come across the conch shell. They blow the shell and suddenly, boys began emerging from all over. Then the boys elected Ralf as their leader and Jack as the head hunter.
"Well I think...Ralph should be our leader."- Piggy, when telling the other boys why Ralph should be leader.
During Chapter 2, the boys come up with a set of rules that everyone agree's too. Ralph puts Jack and a few other choir boys to be the hunters. Eventually, the boys started a large fire with the reflection light from Piggy's glasses. Unfortunatly the fire died quickly. So the boys agreed their new main goal was to get a fire going. Towards the end of the story, a boy goes missing and everyone begins to think that the boy was snatched up by the island's monster.
"Aye piggy, hand over your glasses. We gotta start a fire with your specks." -Jack, when he is trying to start a fire
During Chapter 3, Ralph begins to anger that nobody else is doing any work around the island. He wants the other boys to pull their weight. At this same time, Jack is having big problems of his own. He is frusterated that he still hasnt caught a pig. Simon stops helping Ralph with the huts and takes the littleuns out into the jungle.
"We are all stuck on this island together, whether we like it our not and our sole focus is to get rescueed. So you all need to pull you're weight and buckle down." -Ralp, when telling the boys to follow the rules
In my oppnion chapter 4, was kinda slow and uneventful. The boys continue living life day by day on the island, following their routine. But towards the end of the story, Ralph see's a ship but when he looks up to the top of the hill, he finds that the fire isnt buring. Ralph becomes furious with Jack since Jack was in charge of making sure the fire was going at all times.
"Excuse me! You better have a damn good explanation of why the fire wasn't lit when that ship passed by last night!" -Ralph, when he discovers the boys didnt lit the fire.
During Chapter 5, Ralph blows the conch shell to call a meeting and all the boys arive at the beach. When the boys get there, Ralph scolds them for not upholding the group's rules. Ralph and Jack both agree that there is no monster or beast on the island. But suddenly one of littleuns speak up and claim that they saw the beast one time and everyone panics. After the meeting, Piggy and Ralph debated about whether or not the should join back with Jack's group. Then the chapter closes when a littleuns cries are heard from down the beach.
"Well ummmm, errrr, sir..I saw the beast...just the other day." -The littleun that claims they as the beast.
Chapter 6 opens up with Ralph and Simon carrying on of the littleuns back to shelter in the middle of the night. Suddenly, all the boys hear loud military planes fighting above the island but nobody could see the fight or explosions because the boys in charge of the fire fell asleep. When the boys awake, they care to the fire and get it going again. When the looked up from lighting the fire they saw a beaten up parachute and mistook it for the beast. When Ralph found this out, he called for an island search party and he allowed Jack to lead. Towards the end of the chapter Jack and Ralph began to become friends again...a litt e bit.
"Everyone needs to be doing their job and everyone must be on gaurd. The beast is out there on this island and we MUST find it" -Ralph, when he calls for a search party.
During Chapter 7, all the boys stop to have a bite to eat while they are traveling further into the mountain. Ralph begins to gaze out into the ocean and ponder all different thoughts about if the boys were ever going to escape from the island. In the middle of the chapter, the boys find pig poop and Jack decideds to hunt the pig. Ralph tagged along on the hunt for his very first time and during the hunt he felt an undescriable rush and threw a spear at the bore and it scraped the tip of its nose. Although the bore escaped, the boys were so excited due to the thrill of the chase. They got so crazy they began almost beating Robert to death. Later, Ralph, Jack and Roger climb the mountain in search of the monster. During the climb Jack claims he say the monster. The boys climb to the summit and see something that looks like a gorilla.
"I saw it! I saw it! It's right up the way! The beast!" -Jack, when he see's the monster.
During Chapter 8, the news of the monster causes an up roar. Jack tells the boys that there is defiantly a beast on the island and he tells the boys that Ralph is a coward and he shouldnt be leader. But the other boys refuse to remove Ralph from the leadership role. So Jack leaves and tells the boys that anyone is welcome to go with him. Later that night, one of the boys suggests that they go back to the mountain to search for the beast but all the boys are too afraid. Later, Jack and Ralph kill a big pig. They decided to cut off the pig's head and place it on a stick and use it as an offering to give the beast. With the left over meat, the boy's have a feast and even offer Ralph's crew to join them. At the end of the chapter, Simon goes and sits by himself and observes nature. While he is alone in peace, he sees the pig's head and the pig's head begins tlaking to him, telling him all kinds of crazy stuff. Simon freaks out and faints.
"Ralph is a nice guy? So what! He isnt fit for a leader!" -Jack, when he is telling the boys to get rid of Ralph as their leader.
During Chapter 9, Simon wakes up from his black out and he see's dark skies and clouds. He struggles back to the beach. As he makes his way back to beach he see's the dead pilot and his flapping parachute. He suddenly realizes that all this time, the boys were mistaking the parachute for the beast. In the mean time, all the boys enjoyed the pig meat and all of Ralph's members slowly begin to join Jack's tribe. Jack tells everyone to celebrate, and all the boys begin to dance and sing along the beach., even Ralph and Piggy. Out of now where, Simon comes out from the bushes desperatly trying to tell the boys that their is no beast but before he can talk, the boys begin beating him and ripping apart his body by their teeth, mitaking him for the beast. The boys end up killing Simon. and throwing his mangaled corpse into the ocean..
"Get me another piece of meat and fetch some berries before I go hungry." -Jack, commanding his crew.
Chapter 10 starts out with Ralph and Piggy sitting on the beach discussing how ashamed they are of their behavior the following night. Niether of the boys want to admit they had any part in Simon's death. Ralph and Piggy feel so alone since everyone expect Sam and Eric have joined Jack's tribe. In Jack's tribe, Jack continues to boss the boy's around. He even goes so far to tie up one boy and beat him. Jack even believes that Simon was the beast and that the boys need to continue looking out for the beast because the beast never dies. At the end of the chapter, Jack and his tribe go and sneak up on Ralph and Piggy while they are sleeping and beat them badly and steal Piggy's glasses in order to make a fire.
"Im pretty sure we killed a man last night, Ralph. Do you realize this?" -Piggy, when talking to Ralph about the following night.
During chapter 11, Ralph and his crew discuss what they are going to do and they decide that they have no other choice but to travel to Castle Rock to visit Jack's tribe and try and help them see reason but when they get they are told to leave and they get rocks thrown at them. Out of no where, Jack and his tribe emerge from the bushes with another dead pig. When Jack sees Ralph, a fight breaks out. Ralph struggles for his life and tries to simpily explain that all he wants to do is help the boys get rescueed. But Jack is enraged and begins throwing rocks at Ralph. Suddenly Jack began throwing a boulder at Piggu. The boulder hit Piggy and broke the conch shell and killed Piggy.
"You are so wrapped up on being leader. You have forget that our main focus should be on getting off this stinking island!" -Ralph, when Jack was fighting him.
During Chapter 12, Ralph sits alone in the forest and thinks about all the chaos that has taken over the island. Desperate, Ralph travels to Castle Rock and he is greeted by Sam and Eric who are guarding the territory. They give him food but refuse to go with him. Jack demands to find Ralph so he sets the forest on fire in hopes that he'd smoke Ralph out. Ralph is forced out of the forest and runs from Jack and his crew. Ralph finally reached the beach and feel over because he was so tired from running. When he looks up, he see's a naval officer standing over him. The officer tells Ralph that they saw the forest fire and came to the island. Ralph and the other boys are so overwhelmed and they all had tears of joy streaming down their face.
"He will not escape this island alive. I demand you to find him and bring him back to me, dead or alive or I will jsut have to do it myself!" -Jack, when searching for Ralph.
