Clean Water Act

Why Is It A Law?

Major Reason Why We Have a CWA

Before the clean water act was passed, swimming, fishing, and drinking out of the water supplies was unsafe and unthinkable.

The CWA made it unlawful to release any pollutants into the water systems, but ONLY if a permit was obtained and passed by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)

CWA was enacted in 1948 and was called the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, and expanded in 1972. "Clean Water Act" became the Act's common name with amendments in 1972.
