African slaves

were brought

to North America

1705

A law was made, the slaves were now personal properties and so that slave owners were allowed to kill and destroy runaway slaves. This law affected deeply in southern US.

1712

There was a uprising in New York City. The rebels, which were slaves were later beaten by the military. 19 of them were executed later on.

1861-1865

The American Civil War, the Unions/North against Confederate/South. War claimed around 623,000 people's lives. The Union won and president Abraham Lincoln put an end to slavery.

1739

More Revolts! Around 75 slaves stole weapons and fled towards Florida, later the South Carolina militia crushed them with their forces, resulting 40 blacks dead and 20 whites dead.

1860

Abraham Lincoln was elected president.

US supreme court decides that blacks can never become citizens and that congress has no authority to outlaw any slavery in territories.

1793

The fugitive slave act, US outlaws efforts too delay the captures of runaway slaves

US banned slave trading, but there is still a lot of people smuggling

Kansas - Nebraska act, congress decides to let these new territories choose either to allow slavery.

People choose sides and violence erupt.

1850

California becomes a free state,

Northern congressman accepts a harsher fugitive slave act.

1822

Another slave revolt, this time in Charleston. 35 participants in the revolt were hanged.

1849

Harriet Tubman escapes! She later returns south 15 times to help other slaves escape.

1847

1831

The North Star is published by escaped slave Frederick Douglas in New York

Nat Turner, a slave preacher led a 2 day revolt in Virginia, killing about 60 whites. Militia eventually crushed them and hanged Nat Turner.

1846-1848

The Mexican-American war. Later Mexican lost and the US gained a lot of territory.
