"I can say that I believe strongly in nursing’s capacity and responsibility to make the difference to societal health and health equity in the 21st century. I believe in the philosophy and principles of primary health care as the way to achieve health equity for all people and that nurses must be educated to promote health in diverse community settings including but not limited to institutions. I see nursing as a powerful profession that will continue to evolve and within your careers you will have many opportunities to develop and lead nursing practice and health systems. My practice background is public health nursing and I have learned that nurses must be aware of and advocate for the determinants of health in their practice. I believe in working to maintain a high standard of education for nurses as key to moving forward. I see nursing practice as encompassing roles in direct point of care, teaching students, researching and providing leadership and management, and there is no limit to the variety of types of roles that nurses can aspire too. Nurses have commitment, compassion, competence and caring to succeed in their roles and to make a difference for health" (S.Duncan, personal communication, 2014).
