Population Processes cont'd

What are the birth and death rates within this population?

Because this case does not address the mortality rate of the population of students at Gallaudet, it is irrelevant for the increase or decrease of the birth and death rates of the students at Gallaudet to be known.

Population Processes

How big is this population? Has it been growing or declining in size?

This specific case does not provide a distinct number of students who are within the population size of students and faculty members who attend Gallaudet University, but because the population takes place at a university it is presumed that the population size is large, especially since Gallaudet was the only liberal arts university at that time devoted exclusively to the education of deaf students. In addition to this there has also been no indication of growth or declinations in the size of the population, but since the university was the only to accompany students with hearing disabilities it is assumed that the population rate increased each year since deaf people wanted to be given the rights to education that met their needs. However, after Elisabeth Zinser was elected as president of the university causing the protest to occur, it can also be assumed that the population size could have potentially decreased due to students with hearing disabilities leaving the school since they felt as if they were being treated unfairly and unjust.

Is there movement into and out of this population?

For this case there is no identification of inward or outward movement within the population. The only known movement of this population is the growing anger that was felt by the students of the university, and from this anger was created a protest against the board of trustees for the purposes of receiving a deaf president for the first time at the university.

How would you describe this population's dynamics?

Overall it is unknown of the population's dynamics since the case does not inform the readers of the birth and death rates of the students. Because of this we cannot characterize the population as a high-fertility, high-morality, high-fertility, low-fertility, low-fertility, high-morality or low-fertility, low-morality population.

Population Composition

Are the population and its use of resources sustainable in the current environment?

Based on the problems identified in this case the population and its resources are not seen as sustainable in the current environment. Because the population of students in this case are students with hearing disabilities that demand a deaf president with a background understanding of deafness, and are not given the necessities need for them to successfully achieve in their academics, it is not found that the population and its resources are suitable for the population as a whole. In addition to this because Gallaudet University has only had presidents who can hear it has created a vicious cycle of anger that had grown over the years and made the deaf people of the campus feel both inferior and unheard of their wants, ultimately resulting in the riot and protest against the election of Elisabeth Zinser as president.

Demographic Forces

What is the sex ratio in the population?

The sex ratio of this specific population was completely ignored and unidentified and because of this we are unaware of if the university is mostly male or female dominated and cannot find if there has been constancy or change in this ratio.

Is the population's age distribution skewed toward specific age groups?

Because the population revolves around a college setting it can be determined that the population's age distribution is skewed towards a certain age group, particularly between the ages 18 to 21. However, because college is meant for any individual seeking a degree, regardless of the age, it is not certain how large the population's age distribution is but it is possible that the school's age distribution is primarily centered around young adulthood. Compared to other populations that may consist of grade school students, in this specific population, because it is a university there are proportionally younger to middle-aged people but often times this varies.

What is the dependency ratio in this population? Is this ratio likely to change as this population ages?

The dependency ratio of this population is extremely high since a majority of the students who attend Gallaudet are deaf and hard of hearing individuals. Because these students have hearing disabilities they demand more academic attention and have more requirements that are in need of being fulfilled for their academic success. As the population, which in this case are the students grow older and begin to age it is very unlikely for the dependency rates to change since they will always need these necessities to help the grow and achieve academically both in college and the real world.

How would you describe the population in this situation?

The population in this specific case consists of a group of college students at the University of Gallaudet, a federally chartered private university for the education of the Deaf and hard of hearing, located in Washington D.C. Because Gallaudet specializes on the preferences mandatory for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing, it is necessary for the school to meet all requirements necessary for students who, are at which deaf and hard of hearing. Such requirements that need to be met for the proper teaching of students who are hard of hearing may include the accessibility of a fluent interpreter who has the ability to meet every request made by the student, and faculty members who have background knowledge on deafness and sign language. Because Gallaudet deviated from these norms necessary for the deaf students who attended the university at the time the seventh hearing president, Elisabeth Zinser was elected in 1988, it was visible how "deaf" the university was to its students demands and how much it neglected the needs of it students since a majority of the students who attended Gallaudet were individuals who displayed a disability in hearing, with the exception of few students who had the ability to hear. Aside from the student population at Gallaudet University, we are also aware of the board of trustees at the university who play a major role in this case. This case particularly discusses the continuous dispute between the students and the board of trustees for the removal of the hearing president and election of a first deaf president at the university.

Constructing Scenarios

The background conditions that make the current situation possible is, the board of trustees wanted to appoint a new president at the Gallaudet University for the deaf, but never had the school ever appointed a deaf president before. The fact that when the results actually came in and a hearing woman, Elizabeth Zinser was appointed as president the students revolted against the university as a whole with rage and disappointment based on the decision of the trustees.

Some what if questions are - What if the two deaf men weren't fully evaluated for their credentials? What would happen to the University if they did choose to appoint a deaf man/ women, and how drastically would it affect the university? and, what if the trustees decision wasn't entirely all that fair to the student body?

If the background conditions were to change then the school would not need to elect a new president which indeed wouldn't cause the deaf students at the university to come together and make a change to something that has never happened before.

Urbanism and Community

Deaf President Now!

This case takes place in Washington D.C. Gallaudet University which is urban land. The level of urbanization effecting what goes on in this case is the students having the opportunity to go to the hotel at which the board of trustees were having a meeting and protest right outside as soon as the decision of the president was chosen. Also because they live an in urban area there problem was more exposed then hidden. The students of Gallaudet University were upset about not having a deaf president and the public knew.

Logics of Collective Action

A common interest in this case is that they all care about having a deaf president for Gallaudet University. A common grievance is the protest against The Board of Trustees electing a person who is not deaf rather than a person who is deaf. The expectation of the population has changed because they expect there to be a deaf president and the ability to meet those expectations changed when the students came together for a protest.

The community is powerful for coming together for their community. People have close ties with each other becuase they are a deaf, or support the deaf community are involved with the rights for people with disabilities. The case helped people come together and stand up for what they believe in and showed not only Washington but the whole community of faculty and students from other universities and friends, family and organizations that with the right mindset we can all come together and fight for a cause.

Technological cont.

Technological Forces

The information technology revolution has made some impact on this text but not much, it has made the students capable of understanding that they have rights to appointing a president of their favor because without them their wouldn't be a student body.

Also, the students wouldn't know that they could actually take steps to making the board of trustees change their mind and actually appoint a president that the students could actually relate to. It is clear to see that the only types of technology used in this case is knowledge and power because without them, the students would at this very day and time have a president who they feel cannot give them the help they need.

Some technologies used?

Negative Impacts :(

The only negative impacts of this case is that even though the students did get to appoint their new president, the students did not even think twice about how it might affect the university. In running for the presidential spot was two deaf men and a hearing woman, the reason why the hearing woman was appointed was because she had background knowledge on how to actually run a university in a way that will keep them always on the rise, but she had almost no knowledge about deafness, but, extensive knowledge on higher education. The two deaf men were said to have not that much knowledge on higher education but could relate to the deaf students on terms of sign language ext. The students could be at a loss with the deaf man as a president because he did not meet the credentials of a president who should know how to run a student body.

Even though a hearing woman being appointed as president at an all deaf university might not sound fair, it is also the only way the college has ever been and it was not the right time to appoint a deaf man as president because he did not have the credentials to be president, which in the long run could hurt the college as a whole.

Technological Impacts

Collective Actions & Social Movements

Does this situation deal with work?

Although the text did not include any mechanical technologies such as hammers or nails it did technology such as, knowledge. The students attending the university had known that the school had never appointed a deaf president and they felt like this time coming, a deaf president is exactly what they needed in order to be able to connect with their president, and also he/ or she them in return. An increasing problem in this text is that none of the presidents have ever been able to understand or do sign language and that is the only way that the students connect with one another. A hearing president that didn't know any sign language talking to the public would have to use a interpreter, and information could easily become taken the wrong way or misunderstood.

Another type of technology used is freedom to express oneself because if the students didn't know that they could express themselves through freedom to protest then they would have never been taken seriously, thus, making the assigned president resign and making the new president, a deaf man take on the job as the new president of Gallaudet University.

The aspects of the current situation that some people would like to change is the board and there closed minds. They are not understanding how the kids feel about having a school full of deaf kids and not having a President who can communicate without a translator.

This situation does not deal with work so it doesn't have anything to do with sectors of the economy such as, primary, secondary, or tertiary. Also, the only industry in the case is the Gallaudet university as a whole and it doesn't state how the school is doing in terms of money or finances. No occupations are on the rise or in decline throughout this text.

There are technological development of the sociey in which this text takes place, technology is not a factor in terms of mechanical objects so this does not relate to the case.

A social movement in this case is the Disability Rights Movement the goal of this movement is to show The Board of Trustees that the students of Gallaudet University are ready for a deaf president .
