During this year, Carnegie continued his philanthropy. He founded the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

The foundation still exists and continues to grow.

Carnegie was also very interested in peace and worked hard to support it. One way he did this was by founding the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Carnegie made numerous donations, helping open more than 2,500 libraries and gave away about $350 million dollars.

As mentioned before, Carnegie was very hopeful for peace. So, when World War I started, Carnegie was heartbroken. The day World War I started was the last entry in his autobiography.

1901

During this year, Carnegie faced what was likely his worst downfall. When the company attempted to lower wages at the plant in Homestead, Pennsylvania, workers went on strike. This was called the Homestead Strike of 1892. The conflict turned violent when the manager of the plant called in guards to break up the conflict.

Carnegie makes a major change in his life. He sells his highly successful business to the United States Steel Corporation, started by J.P. Morgan.

This earned him for $480 million, or $370 billion in today's economy.

After selling his business, Carnegie began his philanthropy work. In 1901, Carnegie donated about $5 million to the New York Public Library.

From 1870 to 1889, Carnegie's steel business continued to grow. By 1889, Carnegie Steel Company was the largest of its kind in the entire world.

1889

1870

During these years, Carnegie became a self-designated capitalist. He sold over $30 million dollars in bonds.

Also, Carnegie watched amazing changes occur in England in regards to the iron industry because of of the adoption of the Bessemer convertor. From this, he realized steel was bound to take over the iron industry.

After coming to the realization the steel industry would soon dominate, Carnegie decided to become a steel producer exclusively. He named his company the Carnegie Steel Company.

He set up his first Bessemer steelmaker, and the first Bessemer in the United States.

1865-1870

1853

Carnegie's next job was at the Pennsylvania Railroad. He worked under Thomas A. Scott as a personal secretary and telegrapher.

Scott was starting to become very profitable at the time and was one of the railroad's top officials.

1856

Carnegie moved up in the ranks even more! Now, Carnegie is promoted to superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad.

1851

Even though Carnegie had a good job at the railroad, he decided to leave the job.

He began to focus on other business interests, most notably the Keystone Bridge Company, of which he owned a one-fifth share.

The Keystone Bridge Company worked to replace wooden bridges with stronger iron ones.

1865

Carnegie hoped to advance his career as he moved up from a job as a telegraph messenger to the job of a telegraph operator.

1848

The Carnegie family moved to the United States.

Andrew's mother was very concerned that the family would never get out of the poverty they were stuck in when they lived in Scotland. She was the main reason the family moved to the US.

Carnegie went to work in a factory, earning $1.20 a week.

November 25, 1835

Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland.
