Portfolio for Sociology 101

Creating my own avatar allowed me to realize that all the individuals in our community are diverse. There were so many different facial features, hair colors, clothing options and more to choose from.

• Water Tower is located right near Michigan Ave (also known as the Magnificent Mile). It is the home to the most luxurious and expensive stores.

Explain A Sociology Concept to a Someone not taking the course

• Particularly, I explained gender and religion to her. These discussions led us to the concept of culture. We dug deep into the conversation and talked about the differences between American culture and Mexican culture and how both places are very different.

• This retreat gave me a better understanding of diversity and religion. All of us, students, no matter where we come from, no matter what our beliefs are, struggle with the same things.

• Other LTA interested ladies, Faternites, and I headed down to Senn High School to paint old fences.

• We were a part of a bigger project to rebuild a better community. We came together to build a safer, more beautiful area for the neighborhood.

This film gave me a better understanding of social class. This film is a great example of how just because you are not as wealthy as another person does not mean you should let yourself be taken advantage of. It shows the struggle of how someone in a lower social class has to work harder to reach for attention where as a wealthy individuals have it easy.

• I explained Sociology, in general, to my roomate.

The Defiant Muse

• This play had a strong representation of gender and authority.
• Women are not understood.
• Men have all authority over women and make them feel worthless.
• Sor Juana, a scholar and poet, was confident in her work but when men attacked her, she wanted to let her work go.
• A woman was expected to be nothing more than someone who serves men.
• Men have the authority to state what is right and what is wrong.

• USA:
• Focused more on how disastrous the tragedy was. The United States did not cover the "raw" side of the story.

• UK:

Focused more on the outrage of the event. They were very detailed on the event no matter how horrible it was. They did not sugarcoat the story.

Where Am I Wearing ?

• It was interesting to see where all my clothes were produced. Most of my clothing items were produced in China.

• The best way to be a moral and thoughtful customer in this globalized world is to donate gently used clothes.

• I know that there were horrible conditions behind the factory industry, but this book went in deeper, telling the stories of the individuals who work so hard.

A Day Without Privilege

• After this project, I became aware of how socioeconomic our world is.

• But, there are also many homeless families and individuals curled up in corners waiting for someone to give them money. Some begged, others did not.

• My roomate and I went to Water Tower after a long day of classes.
• I used my meal plan the whole day, no outside food.
• My whole outfit was under $60.
• I did not take an eight minute shower, did not use the computers in the IC.
• All in all, this task was pretty difficult but I did manage to succesfully complete some tasks.
