Introduction

Thailand

  • Traditional Thai paintings showed subjects in two dimensions without perspective. The size of each element in the picture reflected its degree of importance
  • The most frequent narrative subjects for paintings were the Jataka stories, episodes from the life of the Buddha, the Buddhist heavens and hells, and scenes of daily life.

Vietnam

Southeast Asian Art at this time period was greatly influenced by the strong surrounding regions. Except now in this era, many of the different cultures in this region began to show a large independence while mixing in the styles of different areas

Originated as part of the celebration of the Lunar New Year Festival, the villagers drew, engraved on wood and printed colorful pictures onto homemade paper. It was called Vietnamese woodblock print. China, who imported woodblocks from Korea, gave Vietnam the idea.

A rebab is a type of stringed instrument that spread through Islamic trading routes all the way to North Africa, Middle East, parts of Europe, and Far East in the 8th century C,E.

Wat Manorom was built in the late 12th century. It is the perfect example of the influence that Buddhism still hast in Southeast Asia. Its form became one of the most important bases for the Lao style of sculptural art

Buddhist Statues

The oldest large Buddhist statue in the city, it is about six meters high; some parts of the bronze are 15 cm. Wat Manorom has the highest amount of Buddhist monks and statues in all of Southeast Asia, showing the effect the religion had on the region.

Cambodia

  • Khmer ceramics started to be produced in the 9th century. Mass production took place in the 11th and 12th century and spread across Cambodia.
  • Most are created the same way. They are glazed, covered with natural colour, and come in many different shapes and sizes.
  • It was used most likely for rituals.
  • Srivijaya art reflects various infusions of style from India, Champa, and central Java from 7th - 13th century C.E.
  • Sculpture and architectural relics confirm that Mahayana Buddhism was predominate. The style reflects close resemblance to Indo-Javanese art also showing influences from India.
  • From the 11th century Khmer influences were also apparent.

Myanmar

Please note that this dance was more comedic. Most other traditional dances were more elegant. The dancers were supposed to resemble flowers.

Puppets, or marionettes, were the main sources of traditional theatrical entertainment during the time of the Myanmar kings.

The earliest physical evidence of Myanmar traditional dance is excavated antiques in the site of the Pyu city of Srikshetra.

All royal functions began and ended up with music and dance.

The dances of Myanmar all have the same graceful element, but have slight variations in style, costume and movement
