The Importance of

Gulliver's Travels

Gulliver seeks a utopia

- Free of excessive emotions

- Free from irrationality

- Reasoned, scientific

Each world represents a microcosm of different aspects of England, the English and other conflicts.

1. Lilliputians = pettiness, smallness

- Meaningless fighting, Blefuscu (egg)

- Church and state

  • Petty religious problems
  • War

2. Brobdingnagians = human digust, scrutiny

- Exaggerated flaws

- Humans = repulsive

3. Laputa = folly of useless thought, science

- Impractical

- Theories do not benefit society

3. Houyhnhnms and Yahoos

- Yahoos = Animal instinct, irrational

  • barbaric

- Houyhnhnms = highly rational

  • denounce lust, pleasure
  • deny emotion, instinct
  • subject to logic, reason
  • dull and uninteresting life

1. Importance Then

Gulliver, common 18th century man who believes in:

Houyhnhnms, a utopia that nations strive to achieve

MESSAGE

The "utopian" Houyhnhnm community is a satirical world in which all are reasoned and perfect; however, life becomes less meaningful -- in fact, dull.

Thus, Gulliver's Travels admonishes against such perfection and explains that man cannot be perfect.

Rationality

Perfection (humanity)

Progress

Human mind, a blank slate

Swift, on the other hand, disapproved of or doubted such beliefs.

Used Gulliver as a means to admonish against such beliefs

2. Importance Then

Each microcosm displays several trivial/inane aspects of science, conflict and politics

1. Irrational conflict (eggs)

2. Rational thought (utopia)

3. "Proper" way to crack an egg

4. Attacks on political system

- rope jumping contest

5. Laputian science; negative effects

Relevance Today

- Warfare, conflicts

  • Israel-Palestinian conflict

- Religion

- Land

- Political Systems

  • Inane laws
  • Petty fighting
  • "Rope jumping"

- Perfection

  • Man cannot achieve perfection
  • Irrationality and "instincts"

Conclusion:

  • Each body of people represents an idea:

- Humans excessive pride = Lilli.

- Humans under close scrunity = Brob.

- Folly of useless theories, sci. = Laputa

- Worthless rational existence = Houy.

  • Put petty differences aside
  • Swift asks men/women to reexamine

- religion, politics, science, international relations (war)

  • Seemingly normal human traditions or beliefs = weird or alien
  • Man cannot be perfect; our flaws challenge, excite us
