Week 6

Literary Terms:

  • Situational Irony: the outcome is contrary to what was expected
  • Verbal Irony: person says or writes one thing and means another, or uses words to convey a meaning that is the opposite of the literal meaning
  • Dramatic Irony: the audience or reader knows something the characters do not
  • Sarcasm: the use of words that mean the opposite of what you really want to say especially in order to insult someone, to show irritation, or to be funny
  • Tone: the author's attitude

Mood and Tone Words

  • Condescending: showing that you believe you are more intelligent or better than other people
  • Jovial: full of happiness and joy
  • Facetious: funny but is usually regarded as annoying, silly, or not proper
  • Mocking: to laugh at or make fun of (someone or something) especially by copying an action or a way of behaving or speaking
  • Solemn: very serious or formal; sad and serious

Literary Terms:

  • Theme: message about life or human nature, central idea
  • Point of View: perspective from which story is told
  • Conflict: problem faced by main character
  • Mood: feelings of character or atmosphere
  • Tone: author's attitude toward subject or audience

  • Spiteful: having or showing a desire to harm, anger, or defeat someone
  • Inquisitive: tending to ask questions : having a desire to know or learn more
  • Defensive: behaving in a way that shows that you feel people are criticizing you
  • Menacing: a dangerous or possibly harmful person or thing
  • Vehement: showing strong and often angry feelings

Literary Terms:

  • Details: a fact or piece of information about someone or something
  • Compare and Contrast: similarities and differences
  • Author's Purpose: the author's reason for doing or saying something
  • Main Idea: central idea or main point
  • Argument: a statement for or against something

Week 3

Mood and Tone Words

  • Overcome: to affect someone very strongly
  • Awkward: causing embarrassment, lacking skill
  • Impractical: not able to be sensible about reasonable and appropriate matters
  • Contentious: likely or willing to argue
  • Supportive: to agree with or approve of

Literary Terms:

  • 1st Person POV: narrator is character in story
  • 2nd Person POV: uses pronoun "you" to speak to reader (very rare)
  • 3rd Person Omniscient: narrator not in story, can tell thoughts/feelings of all characters
  • 3rd Person Limited: narrator not in story, can tell thoughts/feelings of 1 or 2 important characters
  • 3rd Person Objective: narrator not in story, can not tell thoughts/feelings of any characters

  • Reliable: able to be trusted to do or provide what is needed or to tell truth
  • Naive: having or showing a lack of experience or knowledge; innocent or simple
  • Subjective: based on personal feelings or opinions rather than facts
  • Detached: not influenced by emotions or personal interest
  • Sincere: having or showing true feelings expressed in an honest way

  • Paradox: a statement that apparently contradicts itself and yet might be true
  • Inference: a conclusion that is drawn
  • Simile: comparison using like or as
  • Metaphor: comparison without using like or as
  • Allusion: a reference to another piece of literature, a religious text, or history

  • Alliteration: use of words that begin with the same sound near each other
  • Onomatopoeia: words that imitate sounds
  • Personification: giving living or human qualities to a thing or idea
  • Idiom: saying that means something other than what the words say
  • Hyperbole: an exaggeration for emphasis
