Throughout the play Polonius states his intentions to spy: "I'll be placed in the ear of all their conference", "we will bestow ourselves," and "be you and I behind an arras." Why does Polonius feel the need to spy on everyone at court? Does he truly care to find out the problem or is he just being nosy?

Is it better to be overprotective on children, or allow them to make dumb choices or experience bad mistakes for themselves?

Both Laertes and Ophelia react strongly to the death of Polonius. Laertes vows that "[his] revenge will come" and Ophelia plunges "into desperate terms." Is the relationship between Polonius and his children based on respect and obedience or love?

Throughout the play Polonius uses the people around him to try to climb higher on the Chain of Being. If that is his intention, why doesn't he allow his daughter Ophelia to marry or even be with Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark?

Theme: Being conniving, selfish, and manipulative to attain higher power may initially give the impression of success, however, in reality, it will fail; only those who possess honorable intentions may ascend the Chain of Being.

To spy or not spy: that is the question. If someone is accused of something horrible, such as murder, is it okay to spy in order to find the truth?
