The right to education and democracy

WHat civic responsibilities promote the right education?

  • Voting in Elections
  • writing letters to public officials about important issues

Through democracy and voting, citizens are able to control who they want as their leader. By having this control, they are able to indirectly regulate their countries need for education. They are able to choose leaders who may or may not press the need for education.

Also, typically, truly democratized nations will have a stable education system already and be able to fulfill their citizens right to education.

Respecting other peoples rights

  • Respecting other people's rights

Respecting other peoples rights, includes respecting differences and embracing diversity. Education is key to understanding and developing acceptance. In order to achieve global peace and tolerance, society must be educated and developed enough to accept cultural, religious, ethnic, political, and gender variations.

Writing letters to public officials about important issues

Democracy: "A state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges"

- Dictionary.com

BY taking an interest and being passionate about a certain topic, citizens can create opportunities for change. They will do this by writing a letter to a representative about a current issue. Through legislation, the change may be implemented; and as such citizens whom the issue concerns may become more educated.

Ex. There was a proposal to erect a cell tower in a local residential area. The concern being that these towers can pose as a health risk. So, a concerned resident complied the research about the harm that this tower could create and distributed newsletters throughout the neighborhood with their findings. After becoming educated on this topic, the residents voted in protest against building the cell tower. Despite being offered compensation.

Globalization and The right to education

Why is Education so important?

The right to education is a right that cannot be spread like respecting others opinions. However, it can be enhanced or improved upon. Through globalization, transnational corporations can outsource in impoverished nations and potentially bring more money into the regions economy.

This wealth will likely help develop the education system of that region. By increasing the wealth of individuals (even if by a fraction) can help them to pay for schooling or essential materials. If you look at the bigger picture, on the assumption that a countries general wealth is increased, then the government can look towards enhancing the school system. BY improving the system, basic education will be available to more people, thus further ensuring everyone's right to education.

Education has not always been easy to maintain on a global level. In fact, many developing countries are still struggling with providing substantial education to their citizens. According to world standards, however, every citizen is entitled to a proper education.

The right to education is important because if a country is able to provide education, then their citizens will not only be able to make more informed decisions for themselves, but will also be able to contribute to their nations economy.
