Discovery and Excavation of Troy

Manfred Korfmann

Heinrich Schliemann

- 1988, Turkish Gov. gave Korfmann an exclusive excavation license for Troy

- Altogether 13,240 square metres of land were excavated by 370 archeologists

- August 2003, he announced "Troy was much larger than so far accepted, which I can prove by my excavations."

- Discovered human remains

- 1996, helped establish a national park around the Troy site

- 2 years later UNESCO declared it a World Cultral Heritage site

Frank Calvert

- 1868, German-American adventurer Schliemann arrived at Troy's location

- Heard the claim of Calvert that the hill 'Hisarlik' was likely to be hiding the ruins of Troy

- After walking the site and reading the Iliad, Schliemann wrote

"I was fully convinced that it was here that ancient Troy had stood."

- With his wealth, Schliemann paid for a big archeological dig

- Science of Archeology was new, Schliemann made many mistakes

e.g. he told the world about the set of artifacts that he labeled "The Treasures of Priam"

- If not for Calvert Schliemann's discovery and fame would not be possible

- Schliemann manipulated and took advantage of Calvert

- Schliemann did now know where to look for the Trojan city and was about to give up

- Calvert suggested excavating The Mound Of Hasarlik

- The excavation lasted from 1873 - 1890

- Schliemann gave no credit to Calvert for the discovery of Troy

- Wasn't until recently American and british heirs to Calvert requested ownership.

- Calvert's great-grandson claims they only seek treasure found on non-turkish land

- 'Treasure L' was located on Calvert's land

Who discovered Troy?

Wilhem Dörpfeld

- Troy is still being discovered today

- Together they found many exciting things, including:

- A Mycenaean cemetery at Besik Bay (south of Troy)

- suggested the landing place of the invading Greeks in the Trojan War

- The city we call Troy (founded 2920 BCE) was destroyed at least 9 times

- The Greeks could be called the first "discoverers" of Troy

- Because they founded the town of Ilion on the site (300 years after abandonment)

- Thought their Ilion was on the location of the legendary Trojan War

- Dörpfeld was Schliemann's assistant

- He proved the treasure's were part of Troy II

- Earlier than the Trojan was could have been

- He identified the 9 basic layers of the city

- Labeled them in Roman Numerals

- Favoured Troy VI as the fabled Troy

Carl Blegen

- 1932, Dörpfeld agreed to help Blegen on the site

- Belgen and his crew kept full scientific records and used pottery to date parts of the site more accurately

- Determined Troy V11 was the likeliest time for the Trojan War.

- Based on evidence of burning and siege
