When Nimda was first discovered Symantec's Security Response placed the virus on a code 4 - the highest level possible applying to threats when extreme global network incident activity is in process. It then took 18 months to downgrade the virus to a level 2.

What is the nimda virus?

Nimda is a computer worm, also a file infector.The Nimda virus replicates by sending complete, independent copies of itself over a network.

How was Nimda so effective?

It was so effective because it used every technique it could to exploit PC vulnerabilities. In total it used five different infection paths to cause havoc.

The Nimda's promary targets were Internet servers. While, it could infect a home PC, it's real purpose was to slow down internet traffic. It could travel through the internet using multiple methods, including e-mail. This helped spread the virus across multiple servers in record time.
