Why was the Great Wall built?
First Emperor Qin Shi Huang wanted a much better barricade to protect his people from the Mongols (the invaders) to the north, he wanted a strong wall 30 feet wide and 50 feet high. He ordered that a single strong wall is to be built with thousands of lookout towers where the soldiers could guard and protect his empire.

This amazing wall snakes through the mountains of China for 4,500 miles which is approximately 7242 kilometres. The Great Wall is 25 feet tall and 15-30 feet wide. That’s the width of approximately two cars!It can be seen from space. In fact, it is the only human feature that can be seen from space.
How were the Wall’s dimensions decided?
Because they built the Great Wall of China to block out any invaders it needed the right dimensions and measurements to prevent anything or anyone from getting inside the walls.
It was decided that the walls had to be higher than any man could climb, the width had to be wider than any man could jump and it also had to be as long as possible so the decided that it was going to be around 6 000 km.
What happened to workers who complained?
Those who worked on the wall were local people, soldiers, prisoners and scholars. If you tried to run away or complained you would be buried alive to have a slow painful death with no air or space, as the cement crawled over your skin.
During whose reign in China was the wall begun? How long did it take to build?
The great wall of china was begun in the reign of Emperor Qin Shi and it was finished toward the end of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It took a total of 276 years to build (which equals to over 2 centuries).Three Chinese men were the first to walk the whole Great Wall . It took from May 1984 to September 1985. The adventure took 508 days and Dong Yaohui, one of the three poineers, is now the vice-presiden of China Great Wall Society and a well-known Great Wall Expert.
