Operas

  • It is said that Vivaldi composed over 90 operas but only about half survived and are in bad condition.
  • In 1713, Vivaldi composed his first opera. It was called “Ottone in Villa”. He was given time off from his work as a violin teacher at an orphanage to compose the opera.
  • When Vivaldi wrote this opera he was 35 and already known for his other compositions. A theater asked for him to compose a short and inexpensive opera and he accepted producing the opera “Ottone in Villa”

  • Another of Vivaldi’s famous operas is Griselda.
  • It was composed in 1735.
  • Vivaldi composed it for Anna Girò , who he was close to, to sing the main part.
  • There are no male low parts in the opera and most of the cast involves women.
  • It tells a story about a king who marries an average woman. Then people then tell him that she is not good enough for him so he dumps her. The rest of the opera is pretty much just finishing the romantic plot.

Fun Facts

  • An opera composed by Vivaldi has been known to have existed for a while but the score had not been found. But in 2002 the score was rediscovered.
  • Vivaldi suffered from asthma throughout his life (most likely his cause of death too).
  • He was invited to play for the pope twice.
  • Vivaldi was baptized immediately at home due to danger of death either from poor health condition as a baby or a natural disaster.
  • Bach was a fan of Vivaldi’s work.
  • Vivaldi traveled a lot!

Concertos

  • Vivaldi really liked writing Concertos and in 1785 he composed Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione.
  • Il cimento dell'armonia e dell'inventione means The Test of Harmony and Invention
  • It included 12 concertos which became very popular. Some of the concertos include: The Four Seasons, Pleasure, and The Hunt.
  • Other composers even began composing pieces in the style of the concertos mostly The Four Seasons.

Four Seasons

Oratorio

  • An oratorio is a large musical composition for orchestra and choir (voices) which is usually based on scripture.
  • At the end of 1716 the orphanage that he was at performed one of his oratorios, Juditha Triumphans devicta Holofernis barbaric. It was a description of the Christians winning a battle against the Barbarians.
  • One of Vivaldi’s most famous oratorios is Gloria (in D major).

  • Four Seasons is one of Vivaldi’s most well known compositions.
  • It was composed in 1723.
  • It portrays four different seasons. The different parts are Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
  • Vivaldi mostly featured the violin in this piece because that was the instrument that he played and knew the best.
  • Vivaldi wrote Sonnets (poems) to go with each movement of the Concerto.
  • King Louis XV even liked Spring so much that he had it played at random times.
