Using Data to Bridge the Gap

A summary of our data team experience at CMS

Solutions

What can we do to fix the issues?

Issues

The problems we ran into

1. Begin use of protocols earlier

2. Be sure that there is complete understanding before beginning to use the protocols

3. Identify people to help create strategies and interventions beyond our Special Educators

4. Evaluate the protocol to be sure it is the right one for us!

1. Time of year- This project began at the end of the year when teachers were already feeling the crunch!

2. Miscommunication about protocols led to feeling like more work was being added to the plate!

3. Strategies and interventions were difficult to figure out. We needed help!

Choosing Students

Each team was asked to choose three students, across the grade, who were having difficulty with reading comprehension. It was pre-determined that these students be "bubble" students. These students can maximize the chances for success, which will keep the interest of both the students and the educators.

Next Steps

Where do Data Teams Go From Here?

Our Process

1. Implement Data Team Protocols at the beginning of the year and use with fidelity to see results.

2. Talk about our results, and the tool we are using at specific intervals.

3. Continue to work to refine our practice around using data.

St. Paul Public Schools PLC/Data Team Approach

Why data teams?

The 6th, 7th, and 8th grade teams were asked to use this protocol in their data teams to gather and analyze data until their MAP tests in May. The process is four weeks in length and is cyclical. Each team was asked to follow three students through this process.

How do we help all of our students succeed? By looking at their data, analyzing it, and creating strategies to help them enhance their own learning. On our own we have been using this practice to create student growth in our own classrooms, but imagine what we could do if we worked together to analyze the data we collect!
