People are difficult because...

  • They have moderate to high levels of stress.
  • Personal Problems-Lack of Self Esteem.
  • Have a hidden agenda.
  • Lack of Acknowledgment

Forming good relationships with others in organizations is something that you can control, but only to a point. (Patricia Hayes Andrews & John E. Baird, 2005)

  • Your situation won't get better; left unaddressed, it usually gets worse.
  • It's far better to address the difficult person while you can maintain some objectivity and emotional control.

The Solution

"Today, I will be surrounded by peope who irritate me. I will not demonstrate my irritation." - Marcus Aurelius, an emperor of Rome.

*Self Control: You can control all of these things.

  • Look away & count to ten..repeat as often as necessary.
  • Excuse yourself from the situation.
  • Imagine that you are in your favorite place, doing what you enjoy most.
  • Return to your desk and PLAN your revenge--Don't do it, just plan it.
  • Be polite but assertive in situations where there is no escape.

The Next Step

  • Start out by examining yourself.
  • Approach the person with whom you are having the problem for a private discussion.
  • Follow-up after the initial discussion.

The Last Draw

If you have done what you can and employed the

previous tips with little or no success,

it's time to invlove others.

  • Try to limit the difficult person's access to you.
  • Transfer to a new job within your organization.
  • If all else fails, you can quit your job.

Conclusion

You cannot change other people.

Learning to get along with other people,

even the difficult ones, is an important skill

for positive communication within the business realm
