Arthur Shawcross "The Gennesee River Killer"

WHY IS THIS CASE IMPORTANT?

Sociopath or Serial Killer?

It is important to study Arthur Shawcross in sociology because it shows how events that happen at a young age can effect you later on and dealing with deviance. For example deviance is caused in effect of things such has claiming to be raped and bullied as a child by family and peers. The result in the long run leads to the person leashing out and treating anyone or anything the way they were treated. Shawcross' actions show us that your past can and will effect your future and how that follows the different areas of psychology and criminal investigation.

  • Both!
  • the FBI called him a serial killer and think he was sexually dsfunctional and found gratification after his victims were dead
  • he killed multiple people over a span of time
  • his psych evaluation showed he was sociopathic but sane
  • made up stories that changed in detail and had XYY syndrome which causes high aggression and violence
  • showed no remorse

Sociological Perspectives

Functionalists

  • how society works together in interconnected parts to create a socail equilibrium
  • Shawcross would not fit in with the idea of functionalists because his violent actions cause a disruption in the balance and social equilibrium between humans
  • yes he is still "interconnected" with society he is just working against it

Conflict

  • more powerful groups use their power to exploit ones with less power
  • prayed and exploited women by physically dominating them through strangulation and killng
  • he enjoyed mutilizing their bodies

Victims
