1. Interpretation: Cavener portrays human emotion and conflict through the bodies of animals. Her work centers on human psychology, and can be controversial and even embarrassing. “these figures are simply feral animals suspended in a moment of tension. Beneath the surface, they embody the consequences of human fear, apathy, aggression, and misunderstanding”.
I believe Cavener is frustrated with society, and has found she can express the injustices she sees through her work.
2. Source of Interest: With a mother involved in clay and a father in molecular biology, Cavener got early exposure to ceramics and scientific thinking.
3. Career: Being an artist is Caveners career and livelihood. Her work is exhibited in the Claire Oliver Gallery in New York, NY.
4. Technique: When sculpting larger pieces, Cavener begins by building an armature, then sculpts the form solid. She cuts it apart, hollows, details, and reassembles to let dry. Because they are typically on such a large scale, she must fire them in pieces. She cuts them again into sections. They are individually fired, and then glued back to together. She finishes the seams and adds any non clay touches.
