(1) calculation of the student’s starting point, or
baseline performance, in the identified area of
concern;
(2) Set a goal for student improvement!
(3) Select a method to monitor the student’s progress formatively during the intervention to determine whether the intervention is successful in helping thestudent meet their goal.
1) Decide how you are going to collect your data. – Your method should be one
that can be easily used within a general education class.
For example, curriculum-based measurement (e.g., oral reading fluency; correct
writing sequences), behavior-frequency counts, and direct behavior report cards.
2) Calculate baseline after collection of data – Using at least 3-5 data points
that you have collected, create a starting part, or baseline, of the specific skill or
behavior that is being targeted in the RTI. This is so you can have something to
compare to in order to judge whether or not the student is improving in this area.
3) Set a specific duration of time for RTI – create a timeline that will allow
enough time to collect enough data to ensure the RTI was successful. (8 weeks is
suggested for a high stakes intervention)
4) Set a goal! – Make sure the goal is specific, attainable, and measurable!
5) Decide how data will be summarized - Using the data that has been charted
find either the median or mean of data point from both the middle and final
stages of the intervention to have a good picture of the student’s improvement
or lack of.
6) Evaluate whether the RTI had a successful outcome – Compare the summarized
data with the original goal. If the goal is met or EXCEEDED the RTI was successful!
