The Owner of the Sky

Story

Before there was land, the gods, including Olorun, owner of the sky and Highest being, only lived in the sky, because the earth was just a marshy area. No one actually lived there.

After making the earth, Olorun set another task for Great God-to form and make humans. Great God make humans from the earth, but only Olorun was meant to give life to humans.

Great God was jealous, because he wanted to give life to the people. "I will watch Olorun to see how he does it," thought Great God. So he went to hide, but was still able to witness firsthand. However, Olorun knew everything, and knew where Great God was, so he put him in a deep slumber. When Great God woke, the humans were living. So from now on, Great God only forms humans and leaves a mark. Sometimes he leaves a certain mark that shows how mad he is.

Other Versions

Most versions will have a shell, but there are some differences, such as:

  • Name differences-Olorun (Olofin-orun, Oba-orun, and Olodumare)
  • A god named Olokun- Goddess of sea
  • Great God replaced by a creator called Obatala
  • Great God might have a name called Orish Nla

However, one day, Olorun went to speak to the chief of the divine ones, Great God, to make a firm solid land, giving him a shell with a small amount of earth, a hen with five toes, and a pigeon.

Great God did so, and Olorun sent Chameleon to check the earth. His first opinion was that it was wide, but it wasn't firm enough, but when Olorun sent him back down, it was firm. So, Great God continued making the earth, planting trees, while Ile, which means "house", was brought to stand on the earth, and all other houses came from Ile.
