The battle took place during the War of Jenkins' Ear. The battle's name came from old tales claiming the marsh "ran red with the blood of Spaniards."

The battle only took one day. The Spanish had 52 ships and 2,000 soldiers went to St. Simons Island. Their intent was to drive out the soldiers led by General James E. Oglethorpe.

Oglethorpe had 900 men so he was severely outnumbered.

However, they trained so hard that

they ended up defeating the

Spanish.
