Turning Tides

While the locals knew the terrain and had built an immunity to many diseases that the invaders had yet to come encounter to, they eventually fell short when it came to advancing technology. Imperialist such as Britain created steamboats to travel upstream and inland. Disease was fended off with the use of medical advancements. Lastly, with the use of guns and other firearms, many tribes were no match and much of Africa was taken over.

European countries such as Britain, France, and Germany began the process of imperialism, only to be met with resistance and force from the multiple tribes that were being invaded.

Many of the causes and effects of imperialism are highlighted in the novel, “Heart of Darkness” by Joseph Conrad. It is a historical fiction recollection of a man’s time in Africa during the late 1800s when imperialism was at a high. The following quote serves as a dark view on the truth of imperialism.

Africa has an ample supply of products such as iron, cotton, copper and rubber, all of which are useful in manufacturing, and in etc. In addition, North Africa's lands are composed of mainly fertile soil, which would greatly benefit the agricultural part of Europe.

During the late 1800s, European countries began to take an interest in Africa and its territories, because of its abundance of resources.

For example, the Algerian tribe were met with force by the French troops and battled for years. In another case, the Zulus and Asante battled the British troops fighting for dominance in West Africa. The queen of the Asante, Yaa Asantewaa, led her tribe in battle. In a similar light, Nehanda of the Shona tribe became military leader in the fight against the imperialists.
