Who- A group of Greek city-states vs Persia
What- It was a naval battle. The Battle of Salamis was one of the last battles in the Second Persian Invasion.
When-480 B.C
Where- In the narrow straits of Attica and Salamis.
Why- The Battle of Salamis was to prevent Persia from trying to invade Greece, again.
How- The Greeks rammed the front of their ships into the Persian Vessels.
Result- The Greeks won.
Who- Delian League of Athens vs King Xerves I of Persia
What- a naval battle
When- 469 B.C
Where- near Persia
Why- The Delian League wanted revenge on Persia. Persia tried to invade Greece twice.
How- The Greeks captured Persian men and destroyed 200 of Persia's triremes.
Result- The Delian League got revenge on Persia.
Who- Naupactus ( an Athenian colony ) vs a Peloponnesian fleet
What- a battle on sea
When-429 B.C
Where- off the shores of Naupactus
Why- The Peloponnesian fleet was passing by. It looked threatening to Naupactus
How- 11/20 of Naupactus' navy escaped. The Pelopponesian fleet retreated.
Result- Historians say this battle was a tie.
Who- Tyndaris vs Carthage
What- a sea battle fought for protection
When- 257 B.C
Where- near the Greek colony, Tyndaris
Why- Tyndaris fought a passing Carthaginian fleet.
How- A Carthaginian fleet was passing by Tyndaris. The colony thought they looked threatening so they decided to try to destroy the Carthage fleet.
Result-Tyndaris succeed.
Who- Greeks vs Carthaginians
What- a sea battle
When- 397 B.C
Where- off the coast of Cantata
Why- The Carthaginians advanced on the Greeks.
How- The Greeks were outnumbered.
Result- The Greeks lost.
Who- Athenians vs Chians
What- an ancient sea battle
When-356 B.C
Where- Chios, Greece
Why- They had a conflict with each other.
How- The Athenian fleet lost a 2/3 of their fleet in a storm. Which left them 40 ships against 100 galleys.
Result- Athens lost the battle.
Who- Philip V of Macedonia vs a combined fleet of Rhodes
What- once again an attempt to destroy naval power
When- 201 B.C
Where- off the shore of Chios
Why- Philip wanted to destroy his "ally's" ,Rhodes, naval power.
How- Philip joined forces with Aetolian and Spartan pirates. He lacked experience when he attacked Rhodes. Later on Philip retreats.
Result- Rhodes won
Who- Athens & Persia vs Sparta
What- An attempt to destroy navy power.
When- 394 B.C
Where-northeast of Cyprus
Why- Athens wanted to destroy Sparta's new powerful navy.
How-Athens teamed up with Persia. Athens wanted to crush Sparta. Sparta had the most powerful navy in the Aegean Sea.
Result- Sparta's navy was crushed.
Who-Sparta vs Peloponnesian fleet
What- an attempt to invade Arcania in a storm while passing by a Peloponnesian fleet
When-429 B.C
Where- off the coast of Chalcis
Why- Sparta tried to invade Acarnia
How- While Sparta was on their way to invade, a storm came up as well a Peloponnesian fleet.
Result- Sparta won the battle
Who- Greeks vs Carthaginians
What- A sea battle
When- 480 B.C Almost the same time as the Battle of Salamis.
Where- near Greece
Why- Carthage was trying to invade Greece
How- Greeks burned down the Carthaginians ships and captured their men.
Result- The captured men were a sacrifice to Poseidon and the Greeks won.
