1948
- In the middle of the 20th century, during the struggle for civil rights for African Americans, the flag became more widespread and used among people. In 1948, there was an outburst of use of the flag among the new States Rights Democratic Party, Dixiecrats. They stood for the segregation of races, and against integration of them.
May 1st, 1863
The second design for the Confederate flag was adopted and was known as the Southern Cross. The previous flag looked too much like the United States and Union flag, so it was modified so that there would be a clear difference, for the two sides had different beliefs. Four more states were added to this flag Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.
1861
- The "Stars and Bars" flag was the first battle flag of the Confederacy. It had seven stars that represented the first states that made up the Confederacy before the other eleven were added. The flag essentially represented the southern states, and slavery. It was officially used at Jefferson Davis's inauguration.

1865
- The third national flag of the Confederacy was made, and to make sure it was not mistaken for a flag of surrender, a vertical red line was added to the end. The South wanted people to clearly see the Confederacy as poweful.This flag was flown over some buildings and Southern ships before the official adoption date.
2015
Bree Newsome, an activist from North Carolina takes down the Confederate battle flag at the South Carolina state capitol. She is put in jail for three years after her activist efforts.
