The Final Try

  • At the time IAFIS had a different name, the database was fairly new, and it did not have nearly as many prints.
  • Gerald F. Mason's two prints were "stitched" together and there was an immediate match.

Past Fingerprinting

1863: Paul-Jean Coulier

1880: Dr. Henry Faulds (research)

  • The reason why we say, no two fingerprints look alike.

Present Database

IAFIS (Integrated Automated Fingerprint Identification System): Includes more than just fingerprints

  • 70 million criminal plus 34 million civil prints
  • Largest national database

July 21st, 1957

Latent Fingerprinting Now

  • The basic dusting method is still used today.
  • ALS (Alternate Light Source)
  • Cyanoacrylate
  • Chemical Developers like Ninhydrin or DFO (1,2-Diazafluoren-9-one)
  • Other methods are used for bloody fingerprints
  • Gerald Fatten Mason kidnapped four teenagers.
  • Sexually harassed two of the male teenagers and one female; one 16 and one 17 and 15.
  • Raped one of the female teenager; 15.
  • Proceeded to steel their car.
  • Mason got pulled over and shot the two officers.
  • The car was left further down the road where essential evidence was found.

Case Fingerprints

Can anyone tell me what a latent fingerprint is?

Partial prints were found inside the car but were determined unidentifiable.

The investigators did this using the basic "dusting" method.

  • Fingerprint brush
  • Bi-chromatic powder
  • Lifting Tape
