The Beginning of the Colonies

Mayflower

William Bradford emerges as the leader just like John Smith

They start the Mayflower Compact: Legal contract that protects general goods

The town the start was on Plymouth Rock in Massachusetts

The New England Colonies

  • Puritans sailed over on the Mayflower and established New England colonies
  • Many were called Pilgrims
  • Sailed because they wanted religious freedom
  • Just like Jamestown the Pilgrims were not ready for life in America

Life in Plymouth Rock

Just like Jamestown the Pilgrims need the Indians help

Squanto helped teach the Pilgrims how to fish, hunt and grow crops

The Pilgrims were invited to have a harvest - the First Thanksgiving

Slave Trade

Southern Colonies

  • The south had great agriculture and needed labor to help field their crops
  • In the early 1700's plantation owners switch to slaves instead of indentured servants
  • Servants were getting paid
  • The South passed the "Slave Code"
  • Laws that control the slaves
  • Slaves could not meet or hold meetings

James Oglethorpe founded Georgia

Wanted Georgia to be a place for people who were in debt not slave trade

Was a border state to protect against spanish attacks

The Slave trade soon takes over the south

The Toleration Act of 1649

  • Lord Baltimore propose an act about religious tolerance
  • The Act: A Crime to restrict the religious rights of CHRISTIANS
  • First time we see a law passed about religion
