The Red Fort in Northern Kuwait: al-Jahra

Time frame of al-Jahra Battle

The town of al-Jahra was protected by a strong fort (Red Fort). Shaikh Salim headed to al-Jahra with well-armed Kuwaiti citizens who were joined by additional tribal forces in lieu of fighting the Ikhwan.

Faisal Al-Duwaish led the attack on Kuwait with an army that outnumbered the Kuwaiti forces, thus defeating them at the first battle. Kuwaiti forces then retreated and regrouped in order to plan a better attack.

The final fate of the battle of al-Jahra was determined by the interference of the British army upon the agreement made with Shaikh Mubarak in 1899.

  • British warships anchored in Kuwait Bay in plain sight of the Ikhwan.
  • The Brits used cannon balls and those were enough to warn them that the British wanted the Ikhwan to withdraw.
