Decline and What Happened After

It is believed that due to shortage of resources and food along with a the presence of a new power, what would be known as the kingdom of Mutapa; the Capital City, Great Zimbabwe, and the most of the country was abandoned by its leaders to look for more profitable lands

Outside Influences

Great zimbabwe was a center of trade, exporting gold and other resorces to the indian ocean. The trade routes stretched into asia, and pottery and other goods from china have been found in the citiy's ruins. because of the placement of the city it could control the trade that ran along the route export goods.

Politics and Economy

  • Farmers from the Shona religion built Great Zimbabwe, where only the king and his family lived.
  • Some of the kings included Tashbin Quantiq and Mwenemutapa.
  • Great Zimbabwe was a great trade center.
  • The traded gold and ivory with places asfar as China. In return, they received pottery, beads and cloth.

  • Started in 1100 AD by Shona farmers
  • Became an extensive trading network in the 13-14 centuries
  • Became an important commercial and politic center
  • The kings/rulers led for350 years (1100-1450)
  • Officially abandoned by 1500 AD

  • Their stone walls were built without mortar with some standing over 15 ft high!
  • "Zimba" is derived from one of the languages and is part of the meaning of "Stone Houses"

The people who are believed to have lived in great zimbabwe are the shona; they worshiped the god mwari, along with many other lesser spirits. The shona people comunicated to mwari and the spirits though a medium. this picture below is of a stone tower, thought to have been used for worship.

The people built 8 bird sculptures out of soapstone. Today, Great Zimbabwe is known for these statues

Great Zimbabwe was its own achievement and the ruins serve as a great attraction today
