- In this chapter we see a lot of smuggling and selling of illegal stuff, but this panel mainly focuses on how Marjane is struck by reality. That if Marjane goes out to the street with her rebellious attitude she might get caught, and their will be big consequences.
- This panel made me think on how we lose our innocence with age, I remember that when I was small I did not understand why my brothers would lie to our parents. They would turn on the t.v. when they were told to go to sleep, and at first I did not understand. I think that this is very important through the story because of Marjane's character development, starting out as a kid and now as a teenager.
- Marjane just got caught by two guardians of the revolution, and convinced them to let her go. She just arrived to her house all weary and kind of relieved, she does not tell her mom what happens, and goes to her room.
- I can connect this moment to so many times in my life. I believe it has happened to all of us that we were in a difficult situation that the only way out was inventing a huge lie and getting really emotional. I can't say all the times it has worked like how it worked to Marjane but some times it has. I believe it is important that we acknowledge
- The graphic weight in this image is completely devoted to Marjane. She is the person that jumps out and draws the eye in the panel, and she is obviously the center of attention.
- Marjane's face is very interesting in this panel. It makes the situation more dramatic, and it clearly illustrates the tantrum that Marjane is throwing.
- The Guardian of the Revolution could be considered and iconic image. All of the women that fully support the veil are drawn in the same way. They appear very religious.
- This chapter is basically about Marjane and how she is sort of a rebel-hipster person. So in this panel she shows her rebelliousness by being able to lie to the law without being cached. She was stopped by the law because she was defying it since she wasn't wearing the veil which is a law.
- She is able to fool the guardian and escape by crying enthusiastically and saying that she would be sent to an orphanage. She is exaggerating. The speech bubble has a sharp/pointy appearance, and the words in it are bold and big.
- This panel is interesting because she is able to defy and lie to the law by inventing ridiculous excuses.
- This panel is also interesting because it shows that not at every moment she is as rebellious as other moments. Before she had seen the guardian of the revolution she was proud with her Nike's and without her veil but with the guardian she was crying and vulnerable forgetting all she believed in.
- In this panel, Marjane was caught by two Guardians of the Revolution for wearing inappropriate and "punk" clothing. She lies to the Guardians of the Revolution, and she avoids going to the committee where she could have been detained for days or weeks.
- This panel foreshadows that something bad is going to happen to Marjane because she is getting involved in illicit activities. It also restates that rebellious stage that Marjane is going through. She is both wearing inappropriate attire and buying illegal products. Marjane is beginning to incline towards the Western culture, and she is supporting punk bands such as Iron Maiden.
- I could connect what is happening to Marjane to my life right now. I know how it feels like being a teenager, and there are times when you just want to contradict your parents or society because you just feel like it. Marjane is growing up and finding her way through life, but she has to do so during a very difficult time in Iran. However, I have to say that I have never taken my rebellion to the extremes like Marjane.
- There are a few ironic aspects in this panel. Some smugglers are incorrectly naming Western music stars (Estevie Vonder and Jikael Mackson), which may imply that Marjane is making fun of the Iranian culture or that the actual sellers, who are supposed to be greatly influenced by Western culture, don't know what they are selling.
- The smuggler on the far right is used to show all of the items that are sold in the black market. It may also be meant to create a little bit of comedy since the items are completely different and some are comic.
- In this panel Marjane has her jeans, Nikes, and denim jacket on. She had asked her mother for permission to go to Gandhi Avenue to buy some tapes. She talks about how the black market in Gandhi Avenue has resolved the food shortage crisis. Marjane walks along the street as she listens to multiple offers of mysterious individuals selling music tapes.
- The use of foreground, mid-ground, and background is interesting in this panel. Marjane is located in the foreground because she is shopping around for tapes. The illegal sellers and smugglers are in the mid-ground, and they are offering their merchandise. In the background, shadowy figures that represent regular citizens walking around can be seen.
- There is no graphic weight in this panel even though Marjane is in the front of everything. The individuals that catch the eye of the reader are the 7 sellers from the black market.
- The clothing (overcoat), appearance (mustache), and the body gestures (hands in pockets) of the seven individuals in the foreground symbolize that they are up to no good, and they are probably doing something illegal.
