Fertilizers:Nitrates

Agricultural pollution

Nitrogen fertilizers containing nitrates can contaminate groundwater because nitrates are highly soluble in water. At high levels, nitrates can poison humans, particularly children. Lower levels of nitrates can also be deadly to amphibians. Certain forms of nitrogen are released as gases, contributing to acid rain and climate change. Rainwater runoff brings fertilizers into streams, rivers, lakes and oceans

Fertilizers:Phophates

main elements of agricutural pollution

Type of pesticide:ALdicarb

Phosphorus occurs naturally in rocks and other mineral deposits. During the natural weathering process, the rocks gradually release the phosphorus (Wilkes University, N.D.). Phosphorus is one of the nutrients necessary for plant growth. Although misuse or misapplication may pollute lakes, proper application poses no threat of lake pollution, and may reduce pollution possibility. Inorganic phosphorus moves very little in soil, and when applied as a fertilizer it is quickly bound by soil. If not mixed into the soil, phosphorus from lawn clippings and tree leaves left in the streets and gutters is soluble and a potential pollution source. (Rosen and White, 1999).

Phosphates-A salt or ester phosphoric acid containing PO43- or a related anion or a group such as OP2

Nitrates-A salt of ester nitric acid, containing the anion NO3 or the group NO3

Pesticides-Substance used for destroying insects or other organism harmful to cultivated plant or animals

I’m going to show you how some of these elements can cause agricultural pollution

Aldicarb is a multi-use pesticide that controls populations of agriculturally-harmful insects and nematodes. Belonging to the carbamate family of pesticides, aldicarb inhibits the production of cholinesterase in these various organisms. Primarily an insecticide, aldicarb was first synthetically produced by Union Carbide under the trade name Temik. Since then, because of the chemical's high toxicity, aldicarb has become highly regulated, being marked as a "Restricted Use Pesticide" in the United States.

Effects

  • small amount of ddt can affect small microorganism. This is especially true for microorganisms that live in the water (i.e. algae, and plankton), because the aquatic environment can bring more DDT in contact with these organisms.

background History of agricutural pollution

PEsticides

  • Reduced control of the target
  • Injury of non-target plants and animals
  • Environmental damage.
  • May disrupt the natural balance in ecosystems

For thousands of years, agricutural was a natural process that did not harm the land,it was done on.In fact, many farmers were able to pass down their land for many generation and it would still be fertile as ever. However, modern agricutural-

Modern day pesticides have to deal with the local pests that have existed or hundred of years along with new invasive species. And so, they are laden with chemicals that are not found in nature.

Once they have been sprayed,it does not disappear completely. Some of it mixes with the water and seeps into the ground. The rest of it is absorbed by the plant itself. As a result, the local streams that are supplied water from the ground be contaminated,as do the animals that eat these crops and plants.

practices have started the process of agricutural pollution. This process causes the degradation of the eco-system,land and enviornment due to the modern day by-products of agricultural.

Type of Pesticide:DDt

EuAtrophocation happen as a result of nitrate, and phosphate fertilzers, few algae species produce toxins that can kill fish, birds, and mammals and cause health problems for humans. Other algae species are not exactly toxic

Fertilizers, whether they are artificial or organic, can cause serious problems if they contaminate freshwater and marine ecosystems. The same nutrients in fertilizers that nourish crops, lawns, and golf courses can cause rapid growth of algae, also known as an algal bloom. Dying algae in turn feed bacteria, which consume so much dissolved oxygen that fish and plants cannot survive. Some species of algae also produce toxins that can be harmful to humans.

as a result it effects humans also, an example is that,The stomach acid of an infant is not as strong as in older children and adults.

DDT was the first chemical to be used as a pesticide,It was cheap to produce, very toxic to insects, and much less toxic to mammals. DDT and other organochlorine insecticides were used for many years to control mosquitoes and as a broad-spectrum insecticide against insect pests that damaged food and crops. Unfortunately, scientists learned later that many organochlorine insecticides were persistent in the environment (they did not degrade readily) and were bioaccumulating in birds, humans, and other animals.

futhermore nitrates, and phosphates causes contaminated water.Much of water we use today comes from groundwater resevoirs, canals and through the rains.
